Celine

/sə.ˈlin/

The name Celine (French Céline) is the French feminine form of the Latin Caelinus, itself a derivative of Caelius, an ancient Roman gens name of disputed origin.

The 2 principal etymological theories connect the name either to the Latin caelum (heaven, sky), from the Proto-Indo-European root kai- (to shine), or to an older Etruscan root celi, meaning September.

The heavenly interpretation became dominant in Christian Latin tradition and attached firmly to the name by the medieval period.

What the name Celine means

The Gens Caelia was a plebeian Roman family documented from the 3rd century BCE, with the Caelian Hill of Rome reportedly taking its name from one of their ancestors. The feminine form Caelina appears in Roman inscriptions from the imperial period.

Early Christian usage adopted the name through several minor saints, most notably Saint Celine of Laon (died around 530), mother of Saint Remigius who baptized Clovis, king of the Franks, in 496.

The name gained particular resonance in French Catholicism through Céline Martin (1869-1959), the older sister of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux.

Céline entered the same Carmelite convent as her famous sister and later served as the photographer whose images of Thérèse became central to the saint’s rapidly spreading cult after her death in 1897.

Another cultural association comes from the French novelist Louis-Ferdinand Céline (1894-1961), who adopted Céline as a pen name from his grandmother Céline Guillou.

According to U.S.

Social Security Administration records, Celine appeared sporadically in the top 1000 during the early 20th century, faded, then returned in 1992 driven almost entirely by Canadian singer Céline Dion (born 1968), whose international breakthrough came

with the theme song for Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (1991) and accelerated with the Heart Will Go On from Titanic (1997).

The name remains popular in France, Belgium, Quebec, Germany, and the Netherlands, with steady growth across the English-speaking world.
