Clara
KLAIR-ah
The name Clara comes directly from the Latin adjective clarus, meaning “bright,” “clear,” or “famous.” The Latin root reaches back to the Proto-Indo-European stem *kleh₁-, “to call out,” which also yielded Greek kleos (renown) and the Slavic element
slav- (glory).
Clara is the feminine form of the Roman cognomen Clarus, used in late antiquity. The English variant Clare developed in medieval France and entered Britain after the Norman Conquest.

A strong revival began in the early 2000s, parallel to the renewed taste for Latinate vintage names, and Clara now sits within the top 100. It remains a top-20 choice in Spain, Portugal, Brazil, Sweden, and German-speaking countries.
