The flower has been a symbol of purity, fertility, and royalty since antiquity, associated with Hera in Greek mythology and with the Virgin Mary in Christian iconography.

Liliana developed as a feminine given name in medieval Italy, Spain, and Portugal, where the suffix -ana formed elegant extensions of root nouns and saints’ names.

What the name Liliana means

Variants include Lillian in English, Lilian in French, and Liljana in South Slavic languages.

Although the lily carries deep liturgical resonance, no early medieval saint bears the exact form Liliana.

The name gained ecclesiastical footing through association with Saint Lillian of Córdoba, a ninth-century martyr in Moorish Spain, and with the broader Marian symbolism of the white lily that appears in Annunciation paintings from Fra Angelico to

Leonardo.

Royal usage in Iberia and Italy reinforced the name through minor noblewomen of the Renaissance period.

Modern literature and music expanded its reach. The Argentine writer Manuel Puig featured a Liliana in The Buenos Aires Affair (1973), and the Italian actress Liliana Cavani directed the controversial The Night Porter (1974).

In Mexican telenovelas, the name has been recurrent since the 1980s, contributing to its diffusion across Spanish-speaking America.

The Chilean-American author Reyna Grande used the name in The Distance Between Us, and Pixar’s Encanto (2021) helped revive Latinate floral names more broadly.

Liliana entered the United States Social Security Administration top 1,000 in 1977 and climbed steadily as the Hispanic population grew. It broke into the top 200 in 2005 and reached its peak at 92nd in 2012.

The name now sits within the top 150, particularly favored by Mexican-American and Cuban-American families, though it has crossed into wider use thanks to its melodic structure and links to Lily and Lillian.

It remains a top-30 name in Romania and ranks consistently in Italy, Portugal, and Colombia.
