The parent name derives from the Late Latin Scotti, a term used by Roman writers from the 4th century onward to describe Gaelic raiders from Ireland who settled western Britain.

The ultimate etymology of Scotti remains contested among philologists, with proposed connections to Old Irish words meaning raider or tattooed 1.

What the name Scottie means

Scott appeared as a surname in England and Scotland from the 12th century, with the earliest recorded bearer being Uchtredus filius Scoti, documented in a Holyrood Abbey charter around 1120.

It transitioned into use as a given name in the 19th century, partly through admiration for the novelist Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832), whose works Ivanhoe and Rob Roy sparked a romantic fascination with Scottish heritage across the English-speaking

world.

The diminutive form Scottie emerged in American usage during the early 20th century, most famously attached to Scottie Fitzgerald (born 1921), the only child of F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald.

Her father referenced her in letters and stories, and Scottie served as a model for several characters in Jazz Age fiction.

The name also gained recognition through the Scottish terrier breed, which rose in popularity after President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s dog Fala entered the White House in 1940.

For most of the 20th century Scottie functioned as a masculine nickname, but it has shifted decisively toward feminine use in the 21st century. U.S.

Social Security Administration records show Scottie entering the girls’ top 1000 in 2018 and climbing steadily, part of a broader revival of vintage unisex nicknames such as Frankie, Charlie, and Tommie.

Contemporary bearers include professional golfer Scottie Scheffler and American singer Scottie Beam, while the name continues to gain traction in the United States, Canada, and Australia.
