In the New Testament, Zechariah (rendered as Zacharias in Greek) is the father of John the Baptist. The Gospel of Luke describes Zechariah as a priest who received a divine message announcing his son’s birth despite his wife Elizabeth’s advanced age.

His story opened the narrative of the New Testament’s nativity sequence, making him a figure of significant theological importance in Christian tradition. The name was borne by a pope, Pope Zachary, who served from 741 to 752 AD.
