Angel

AYN-hel

The name Angel comes from the Latin Angelus, itself borrowed from the Greek angelos (ἄγγελος), meaning “messenger.” Greek translators of the Hebrew Bible used the word to render mal’akh (מַלְאָךְ), the term for divine messengers, and Christian Latin

preserved the theological sense.

The personal name appears across the Greek-speaking Mediterranean from late antiquity onward, often as Angelos, while the Spanish Ángel, Italian Angelo, and Portuguese Anjo developed in parallel during the medieval period.

What the name Angel means

Several saints carried the name. Saint Angelus of Jerusalem was a thirteenth-century Carmelite friar martyred in Sicily in 1220; his cult spread across the Mediterranean and helped establish the name in Italian and Spanish use.

Pope Angelo Roncalli took the name John XXIII in 1958 and convened the Second Vatican Council, while medieval Italy produced Angelo Poliziano, the Renaissance humanist and tutor to the Medici children.

Cultural reach is dense in the Hispanic and Italian worlds. The name appears in works from Dante to Dario Fo.

In film, the title character of Angel Heart (1987), the vampire-with-a-soul of Joss Whedon’s series Angel (1999-2004), and the protagonist of the Spanish-language El Ángel (2018) all carry the name.

Spanish footballer Ángel Di María, World Cup winner with Argentina in 2022, gave it global sporting visibility, while Ángel Cabrera won golf’s Masters Tournament in 2009.

Angel’s American story is closely tied to Hispanic immigration patterns. It entered the SSA top 1000 in 1936, climbed steadily through the latter half of the twentieth century, and reached a peak of 32nd in 2007.

As of 2024 it sits near 70th, with particularly strong use among Mexican American, Puerto Rican, and Dominican American families.

It is one of relatively few names used as both a masculine name in Spanish-speaking countries and a feminine name in English-speaking ones, a duality that gives it unusual cross-cultural reach.

Contemporary bearers include the Argentine and Spanish footballers above, boxer Ángel García, and characters across telenovelas from Univision and Telemundo.

The name carries Catholic devotion, athletic glamour, and angelic gentleness in a single syllable.
