Axel
AK-sel
The name Axel is the medieval Scandinavian form of the Hebrew Avshalom (“my father is peace”), recorded in the Old Testament as the third son of King David.
The transmission ran through Latin Absalom into Old Danish Absalon, then contracted to Axel by the late Middle Ages. The shift from Abs- to Ax- reflects the Scandinavian tendency to elide unstressed syllables and to harden labials before liquids.
The most influential historical bearer was Absalon of Lund (c. 1128-1201), warrior-bishop, Archbishop of Lund and founder of the city of Copenhagen in 1167. His statue still dominates Hojbro Plads in the Danish capital.
