Beau

BOH

The name Beau comes directly from the French adjective beau, meaning “handsome,” “notable,” or “fair.” It descends from the Old French biau, which in turn derives from the Latin bellus, a diminutive form of the older bonus (“good”).

The same root produced the Italian bello, the Spanish bello, and English vocabulary words such as beauty, belle, and notable.

As a personal name it began as a nickname or epithet for a particularly attractive man before hardening into a hereditary form.

What the name Beau means

The English word beau entered general use in the seventeenth century as a noun meaning a fashionable man or a male suitor, popularized by figures such as Beau Brummell (George Bryan Brummell, 1778-1840), the English dandy whose attention to grooming

and tailoring set the standard for Regency male fashion and earned him the friendship of the future George IV.

His influence shaped the modern men’s suit and gave the word an enduring association with elegance and self-presentation.

Cultural use is broad in American letters and film. The novel Beau Geste by P. C. Wren (1924), a French Foreign Legion adventure story, was adapted four times for film, most famously with Gary Cooper in 1939.

Tennessee Williams gave the name to a character in The Glass Menagerie; the Marx Brothers used it in their comedies; and the country song Beau John by Buck Owens kept it in mid-century American consciousness.

The actor Beau Bridges, son of Lloyd and brother of Jeff, has worked steadily since the 1950s, while Beau Biden (1969-2015), Attorney General of Delaware and son of US President Joe Biden, gave the name a recent civic profile.

Beau first entered the SSA top 1000 in 1965, climbed gently through the 1970s and 1980s on the strength of the Beau Bridges name, and accelerated sharply after 2010 as part of the broader American return to short, soft, single-syllable boys’ names

alongside Cole, Reid, and Tate.

It crossed into the top 200 in 2018 and as of 2024 sits near 80-100, with particularly strong use in Australia and New Zealand where it has been a top 50 fixture for two decades.

Contemporary bearers include the sons of several Hollywood couples and Australian sporting figures. The name carries French elegance, southern charm, and a touch of gentlemanly mischief.
