Callan
/ˈkæl.ən/
The name Callan is an Anglicization of the Irish Ó Catháin, “descendant of Cathán,” itself a diminutive of the Old Irish cath, meaning “battle.” The suffix -án functions as a diminutive or hypocoristic, so the literal sense is “little battler” or
“little warrior.” The root cath reaches back to the Proto-Celtic *katus and ultimately the Proto-Indo-European *kat-, “fight,” which also yielded the Latin catervae (“troops”) and the Old High German hadu.
The Catháin (Cahan, Keane, Kane) sept was seated in medieval Ulster, controlling territory in what is now County Londonderry.
