Callum

/ˈkæl.əm/

The name Callum is the Scottish Gaelic form of the Late Latin Columba, meaning “dove.” The dove carried strong Christian symbolism from the earliest centuries, representing the Holy Spirit at the baptism of Jesus and the peace returned to Noah after

the flood.

Gaelic speakers adapted Columba as Calum, with the doubled spelling Callum emerging in the 19th century as Scottish naming customs were standardized in writing.

What the name Callum means

The name owes its endurance to Saint Columba of Iona (521-597 CE), the Irish missionary who founded the monastery on the Hebridean island of Iona in 563 CE and led the Christianization of Pictish Scotland.

His biographer Adomnán composed the Vita Columbae around 700 CE, one of the most important hagiographies of the early medieval period.

Columba is one of the 3 patron saints of Ireland alongside Patrick and Brigid, and his feast day on 9 June remains widely observed in Scotland and Ireland.

The name remained largely confined to the Scottish Highlands until the 20th century, when the broader Celtic revival brought it into common British usage.

Scottish actor Callum Keith Rennie, known for roles in Battlestar Galactica and Due South, helped raise the name’s profile in North America.

British actor Callum Turner, star of Masters of the Air (2024), and Premier League footballers Callum Wilson and Callum Hudson-Odoi kept it in current cultural circulation.

Callum entered the SSA top 1000 in 2003, decades after it had become a top-20 staple in Scotland and northern England. Its US trajectory has been gradual but consistent, with the spelling Callum outpacing the Gaelic Calum by a wide margin.

By the early 2020s it had reached the top 500, favored by parents seeking a Celtic name with deep monastic roots and a soft phonetic profile that travels easily across English-speaking countries.
