The most widely accepted derivation is from an Old English personal name Cola, plus the topographic element tun (“farmstead, settlement, enclosure”), giving “Cola”s farm”.

The personal name Cola itself derives from col (“coal, charcoal”), perhaps a nickname for a man with dark hair or complexion.

What the name Colton means

An alternative etymology, applied to a few northern English instances, sees Colton as Col-tun with col in its literal sense, marking a settlement where charcoal was burned.

The surname spread modestly through the late medieval period and crossed to the American colonies with English settlers in the seventeenth century. George R.

Colton served as the second civil governor of Puerto Rico in the early twentieth century, and the family produced several Massachusetts state legislators.

The transformation of Colton into a common given name is a phenomenon of late twentieth century American naming, driven by the preference for two-syllable surname-style choices ending in -on.

The name benefited from the popularity of similar forms such as Cole, Colt, Carter and Cooper.

The Bachelor franchise”s Colton Underwood, who appeared on the show in 2018-2019, brought the name to wider US television audiences. The country singer Colton Dixon, finalist on American Idol in 2012, is another prominent bearer.

According to US Social Security Administration records, Colton first entered the top 1000 in 1982, climbed steadily through the 1990s, and broke into the top 100 in 2009.

It reached its peak rank of 52 in 2012 and held position 113 in 2023. The name is particularly popular in Texas, Oklahoma, Wyoming, Idaho and the Carolinas, where it carries strong associations with cowboy and country culture.

Contemporary bearers include NHL player Colton Parayko and US actor Colton Haynes.
