LOO-kas

Lucas is the Latin and Greek form of Luke, derived from the Greek Λουκᾶς (Loukas), which is most widely traced to the Latin “lux” (light), through the Late Latin Lucanus, meaning “1 from Lucania” (a region of southern Italy), or alternatively as a

Greek rendering of the Latin cognomen Lucius (also connected to “lux”).

The Proto-Indo-European root “*lewk-” (light, brightness) underlies both the Latin “lux” and related forms across Indo-European languages, including the Greek “leukos” (white, bright).

What the name Lucas means

In the New Testament, Luke is identified as the author of the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles, and is described by Paul in Colossians 4:14 as “the beloved physician,” making him patron saint of physicians, surgeons, and artists.

The Latin form Lucas appears in the Vulgate Bible and in medieval ecclesiastical records, used interchangeably with Lukas (German), Luc (French), and Luca (Italian).

The name spread across Catholic Europe through the veneration of Saint Luke and remained a common clerical and lay name throughout the medieval and early modern periods.

In the Spanish and Portuguese-speaking world, Lucas was the dominant vernacular form from the medieval period, carried to the Americas through colonial settlement and remaining common in Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, and Spain to the present day.

In the United States, Lucas ranked outside the top 100 for most of the 20th century, beginning its rise in the 1990s and entering the top 10 by 2015, reaching number 8 by 2021.

George Lucas, director of the “Star Wars” franchise (from 1977), gave the name surname visibility that may have contributed to parental familiarity, though the naming trend is broader than any single cultural figure.

In Brazil, Lucas has been among the most popular masculine names since the 1980s, reflecting both Portuguese linguistic tradition and strong Catholic saint veneration.

The name is now consistently top-ranked in France, Belgium, Portugal, Spain, Brazil, and throughout anglophone countries, making Lucas 1 of the most geographically widespread masculine names in current global use.
