Leon
/ˈli.ɑn/
The name Leon derives from the Greek Leōn (Λέων), meaning simply “lion.” The Indo-European root behind the word is uncertain; Greek leōn, Latin leo, and the Hebrew lavi may all share a Mediterranean substrate origin connected to early encounters with
the now-extinct Barbary lion.
The Latin form Leo generated a vast European family of cognates, including the Italian Leone, the French Léon, the German Leon, the Russian Lev, and the Spanish León.
What the name Leon means
The name was borne by 13 popes, beginning with Leo I the Great (c.
400-461), who famously persuaded Attila the Hun to spare Rome in 452 and is one of only three popes traditionally given the title “the Great.” Leo III crowned Charlemagne emperor on Christmas Day 800, an act that reshaped the medieval political order.
The Byzantine Empire produced six emperors named Leo, including Leo III the Isaurian, who initiated the iconoclast controversies in 726.
Russian literature gave the world its most famous Leon in Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy (1828-1910), whose first name is rendered Leon in many Romance languages.
Tolstoy’s War and Peace and Anna Karenina are routinely cited as the twin peaks of the realist novel.
The Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky (born Lev Bronstein in 1879) led the Red Army during the civil war and was assassinated in Mexico in 1940.
The American poet Leon Forrest and the French film director Leós Carax extend the literary lineage into the modern era.
Leon has appeared in US Social Security records continuously since 1880, peaking at No. 76 in 1903 and again finding strong revival in the 21st century. By 2024 it sat inside the top 200 after climbing steadily for 2 decades.
The name is a top-10 fixture in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, where it has dominated annual rankings throughout the 2010s and 2020s, and ranks consistently inside the top 50 in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Croatia.
Contemporary bearers include the French actor León the Professional’s titular character (played by Jean Reno), the American singer Leon Bridges, and the rock musician Leon Russell.
With its short, lion-strong sound and pan-European credentials, Leon has become one of the standout cross-cultural revivals of the post-2000 era.
