Oscar
AWS-ker
The name Oscar has a dual etymology reflecting 2 separate linguistic traditions.
The Old English form combines os (“god”) and gar (“spear”), giving the meaning “god’s spear” or “divine spear.” A parallel Old Irish source proposes os (“deer”) and cara (“friend”), yielding “deer friend” or “friend of the deer,” an interpretation
tied to the hero Oscar, grandson of the bard Ossian in Gaelic legend.
What the name Oscar means
The name reached continental Europe through James Macpherson’s Ossian poems (1760-1765), purporting to be translations of ancient Gaelic epics.
Though later shown to be partly invented, the poems swept Europe and became favorite reading of Napoleon Bonaparte, who named his godson Oscar Bernadotte after the hero.
That godson became Oscar I of Sweden (1799-1859), establishing the name as royal in Scandinavia, where it remains popular to this day.
In literature, the most famous Oscar is the Irish playwright and wit Oscar Wilde (1854-1900), author of The Picture of Dorian Gray (1890) and The Importance of Being Earnest (1895).
The Academy Awards statuette, officially named the Academy Award of Merit, has been nicknamed “Oscar” since the early 1930s, possibly after Academy librarian Margaret Herrick’s cousin.
Sesame Street’s grouchy puppet Oscar the Grouch (debuted 1969) added another cultural layer.
Oscar has appeared in the U.S. Social Security Administration top 1000 continuously since 1880, peaking inside the top 50 around the turn of the 20th century and enjoying a strong revival since the 2010s.
It is among the top 10 boys’ names in Sweden, Denmark, Spain, and the United Kingdom, where it reached number 1 in 2013.
Contemporary bearers include Mexican boxer Oscar De La Hoya, Spanish footballer Oscar Mingueza, and British actor Oscar Isaac.
