Tyler

tegula, a roof tile.

Tiling was a skilled trade in medieval England and France, and craftsmen’s surnames often derived from their occupation in the naming conventions that solidified between the 11th and 14th centuries.

What the name Tyler means

As a surname, Tyler gained historical prominence through Wat Tyler (died 1381), the leader of the Peasants’ Revolt in England, one of the first major popular uprisings in English history.

The surname reached American prominence most notably through John Tyler (1790-1862), the 10th President of the United States, who served from 1841 to 1845.

As with many presidential surnames, John Tyler’s name contributed to its eventual adoption as a first name.

The transition of Tyler to a given name accelerated sharply in the 1970s and 1980s in the United States, driven by the broader fashion for occupational and surname-style first names.

It became one of the defining names of its generation, ranking in the top 10 for American boys during the 1990s and remaining in the top 20 for most of that decade.

The television series The Young and the Restless and other popular media helped familiarize the name for millions of viewers.

By 2024, Tyler ranked in the top 80 for American boys, a notable persistence given that its generational peak was over 20 years prior.

The name also functions occasionally as a girl’s name, though its usage is overwhelmingly male. It remains particularly popular in Southern and Midwestern states.

Tyler carries straightforward American associations: accessible, strong, unpretentious.

Its occupational etymology, presidential history, and deeply embedded generational presence give it a stability that more trend-driven names lack, explaining its continued relevance across cohorts of American parents.
