Xander
ZAN-der
The name Xander is a short form of Alexander, derived from the Greek Alexandros (Ἀλέξανδρος), a compound of alexein (“to defend, to ward off”) and aner, genitive andros (“man”).
The meaning is therefore “defender of men.” The Xander spelling originates in Dutch and Flemish, where it developed as a natural abbreviation of the full Alexander, the initial X representing the Greek letter chi in Xavier-style spellings.
While Alexander itself reaches back to Mycenaean Greek inscriptions from around 1400 BCE and was borne most famously by Alexander the Great of Macedon (356-323 BCE), the Xander form is a relatively recent offshoot.
What the name Xander means
It has been common in the Netherlands and Belgium since the 19th century, where it produced bearers such as the Dutch crown prince Willem-Alexander, often called Xander in informal Dutch contexts.
In English, the Xander spelling became prominent through popular culture, particularly the character Alexander “Xander” Harris in the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003), created by Joss Whedon.
The show’s cult following drove thousands of American parents to adopt the spelling. Another influential character is Xander Cage, the action hero played by Vin Diesel in the film xXx (2002).
Xander first entered the U.S. Social Security Administration top 1000 in 1998, precisely during Buffy’s broadcast run, and climbed steadily to reach inside the top 200 by 2011.
It is most popular in the United States, Canada, the Netherlands, and Belgium, with growing use in Australia and the United Kingdom.
Contemporary bearers include American professional golfer Xander Schauffele, 2024 Masters Tournament champion, and Xander Bogaerts, a Major League Baseball shortstop from Aruba.
