The Scottish origin comes from the lands of Brodie in Moray, a place name derived from the Gaelic brothaigh, possibly meaning “ditch” or “muddy place,” though some scholars connect it to the Pictish broth, meaning “mire” or “bog.” The Irish origin

links the name to Ó Bruaídeach, meaning “descendant of the fragmenter,” from bruaidhe, a word suggesting someone who breaks or smashes.

What the name Brody means

The Clan Brodie of Scotland, based at Brodie Castle near Forres in the Scottish Highlands, has been documented since the 12th century and granted a royal charter by Robert the Bruce in 1311.

Notable historical figures include Alexander Brodie (1617-1680), a Scottish judge and Lord of Session who played a role in the Covenanter movement during the English Civil War.

The name also appears in literature and popular culture through the character Quinton “Brody” Brody in Stanislaw Lem’s science fiction and the character Brody Jenner (born Brandon Jenner) in American reality television.

The character Brody in Steven Spielberg’s Jaws (1975), Chief Martin Brody, played by Roy Scheider, gave the name a strong association with competence under pressure.

As a first name, Brody entered the U.S. Social Security Administration top 1000 in 1976 and climbed steadily, breaking into the top 100 in 2007.

Its rise reflects a broader trend toward Celtic surnames repurposed as first names, alongside Riley, Cooper, and Cody. The name is also commonly used as a feminine name in small numbers, though the masculine use dominates.

Brody is most popular in the United States, Canada, Ireland, and Australia. Contemporary bearers include American actor Brody Jenner, Canadian swimmer Brody Dolyniuk, and NFL wide receiver Brody Eldridge.
