Ximena
/xi.ˈme.na/
Ximena is the medieval Spanish feminine form of Jimeno, an Iberian name of debated etymology.
The most cited origin is Basque, deriving from seme meaning “son” and possibly related to the Basque verb entzun, “to listen.” An alternative tradition connects it to the Hebrew Shimʾon, “he has heard,” the source of Simon.
The initial X- in medieval Spanish represented the sound now written as J-, so Ximena and Jimena are orthographic variants of the same name, the older spelling preserved primarily in Mexico and other parts of Latin America.
What the name Ximena means
The name’s historical importance rests on Doña Jimena Díaz (c. 1046-1116), wife of the Castilian nobleman Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, known to history as El Cid.
After her husband’s death in 1099, she ruled the city of Valencia until 1102, when she was forced to surrender it to the Almoravids. Her dignified resistance made her one of the most celebrated women of medieval Iberia.
The literary tradition of El Cid ensured the name’s survival. The 12th-century Cantar de Mio Cid, the oldest preserved Castilian epic poem, features Jimena as a central figure.
Pierre Corneille’s 1636 French play Le Cid brought her story to European theatrical audiences, and Jules Massenet’s opera Le Cid (1885) added a further musical layer.
The 1961 film El Cid starring Charlton Heston and Sophia Loren reintroduced the story to international audiences.
In the United States, Ximena entered the SSA top 1000 in 1995 and rose rapidly with the growth of Hispanic-American naming traditions, reaching the top 150 by the early 2020s.
It is a top 30 name in Mexico and is widely used in Colombia, Peru, and Chile.
The name carries 1,000 years of Iberian historical resonance in a form whose unfamiliar initial letter gives it striking visual distinctiveness.
