Abdolhossein

In Shia Islam, Husayn ibn Ali holds a position of supreme veneration as the third Imam, and his martyrdom at the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE defines the Shia calendar’s most solemn observance, Ashura.

Naming a child after Husayn—or as his servant—is considered an act of religious devotion in Iranian Shia communities.

Abdolhossein belongs to a cluster of distinctly Iranian Shia names following the same pattern: Abdolali (servant of Ali), Abdolhassan (servant of Hassan), and Abdolmahdi (servant of the Mahdi).

These names appear almost exclusively in Iran and among Iraqi and Lebanese Shia Arabs who use the Persian form. The classical Arabic form Abd al-Husayn is used by some Shia Arabs outside Iran.

The name was common throughout 20th-century Iran, particularly in the decades before and after the 1979 revolution, when Shia religious naming practices were reinforced. In informal address, the name is often shortened to Abdol. Iranian poet Abdolhossein Saneʿi and various government and academic figures have carried the name.

According to SSA records, Abdolhossein does not appear in the US top 1000. The name is in use in Iranian-American communities, where it typically arrives as a given name from Iran rather than being chosen freshly in the United States.
