Addolorata

Addolorata Name Meaning, Origin & Popularity

/ad.do.lo.ˈra.ta/

Meaning of Addolorata: Addolorata is an Italian feminine given name derived from the Marian title Maria Santissima Addolorata—Most Holy Mary of Sorrows—one of the oldest and most venerated Marian devotions in Catholic tradition.

The word addolorata is the feminine past participle of addolorare (to cause grief, to afflict), from dolore (pain, sorrow), ultimately from Latin dolor. The Seven Sorrows of Mary, memorialized in the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows on September 15, form the theological basis of this devotion.

The cult of Our Lady of Sorrows spread through southern Italy and Sicily beginning in the medieval period, and devotional names honoring the Virgin’s suffering became common practice among Catholic families.

What Does Addolorata Mean? Origin & Etymology

The Servite Order, founded in Florence in the 13th century, played a significant role in promoting Marian Sorrows devotion throughout Italy. Addolorata was a popular name among devout Catholic families in Puglia, Calabria, Campania, and Sicily from the 17th through 19th centuries.

Addolorata is now an old-fashioned name in Italy, largely replaced by simpler Marian names such as Maria, Dolores, or the Spanish-influenced Dolores. It survives in use among older generations and in some traditional families in southern Italy.

The name is also found in Italian-American communities descended from southern Italian immigrants of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, where it is sometimes shortened to Lora, Loreta, or Dora.
