Aeneas

Aeneas Name Meaning, Origin & Popularity

/ai.ˈneː.aːs/

Meaning of Aeneas: Aeneas is a Latin form of the ancient Greek name Aineias (Αἰνείας), whose etymology is uncertain. Ancient Greek sources sometimes connected it to ainein (to praise), giving the meaning "the praised one," but modern scholarship has not confirmed this folk etymology as definitive.

Other proposed derivations include connections to Aineia, a town in Macedonia, or to a pre-Greek substrate name. In Greek legend, Aeneas was a Trojan hero—son of the mortal Anchises and the goddess Aphrodite—who fought in the Trojan War alongside the defenders of Troy.

Aeneas's greatest significance is as the protagonist of Virgil's Aeneid (c. 29–19 BCE), the Latin epic poem that became the foundational text of Roman literary culture. In the Aeneid, Aeneas survives the fall of Troy, wanders the Mediterranean, and eventually reaches Italy.

What Does Aeneas Mean? Origin & Etymology

In Italy, Aeneas fights a war and founds the lineage from which Romulus—and ultimately Rome—will descend. The Aeneid gave the Roman Empire a Trojan mythological pedigree, connecting Roman destiny to Homeric epic tradition and to the goddess Venus as divine ancestor of the Julian family.

Aeneas serves as a given name primarily in Scotland, where it functions as the anglicization of the Scottish Gaelic name Aonghus (Angus). The name appears in Scottish historical records from the medieval period onward and is encountered in Scottish Highland and island communities.

Notable Scottish bearers include Aeneas Mackintosh (1879–1916), the Antarctic explorer who participated in Ernest Shackleton's Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition. According to SSA figures, Aeneas is extremely rare in US birth records. Reference: etymology records.
