Agenor

Agenor Name Meaning, Origin & Popularity

Meaning of Agenor: Agenor (Ἀγήνωρ) is an ancient Greek masculine name derived from agan (very much) and anēr (man, genitive andros), with the combined meaning very manly, heroic, or exceedingly masculine. The agan- prefix was a common Greek intensifier, appearing also in Agamemnon and Agathon.

The name belongs to a group of Greek compound names built with the intensifying element agan. This prefix indicated superlative qualities and was applied in Greek name-forming to produce epithets of heroic character appropriate for warriors, kings, and mythological figures.

In Greek mythology, the most significant bearer is Agenor, king of Phoenicia, son of Poseidon and Libya. He is the father of Europa, whose abduction by Zeus in bull form and transport to Crete initiated one of the great Greek mythological narratives.

What Does Agenor Mean? Origin & Etymology

Agenor is also the father of Cadmus, who searched for his abducted sister Europa and eventually founded Thebes in Boeotia. According to myth, Cadmus introduced the Phoenician alphabet to Greece—making Agenor the ancestor of the Theban royal line that produced Oedipus and Antigone.

Agenor also appears in Macedonian historical records as a name borne by several nobles in the period of Alexander the Great, demonstrating its use beyond mythology. Various ancient cities named Agenoria or Agenoreia preserved the name in geographical form across the ancient Greek world.

Agenor is not used in any modern naming tradition and is essentially unknown outside classical scholarship and discussions of Phoenician mythology. According to SSA figures, it does not appear in US birth records. Reference: etymology records.
