Bethel Name Meaning, Origin & Popularity

/ˈbɛθ.əl/

Meaning of Bethel: The name Bethel derives from the Hebrew בֵּית־אֵל (Bēṯel), a compound of bayit (“house”) and El (“God”). The literal meaning “house of God” names a specific place in ancient Israel as well as functioning as a devotional concept in Jewish, Christian, and biblical-literary tradition.

The Old Testament Book of Genesis records the origin of the place name. Jacob, fleeing from his brother Esau, slept at a rocky site on the road north from Beersheba and dreamed of a ladder connecting heaven and earth.

He named the place Bethel in the morning, declaring it “the house of God and the gate of heaven.”.

What Does Bethel Mean? Origin & Etymology

Furthermore, Bethel became one of the most important cult centers of ancient Israel, rivaling Jerusalem during the divided monarchy period. Jeroboam I established a royal sanctuary there in the tenth century BCE, which shaped the political geography of the Northern Kingdom (see Bethel).

As a personal name, Bethel entered English usage through Puritan biblical naming practice in the seventeenth century. American Puritan settlers in New England and Pennsylvania chose biblical place names for children, producing a cluster that includes Bethel alongside Zion, Salem, Horeb, and Canaan.

Notably, nineteenth-century American religious movements preserved the name. The Plymouth Brethren Christian communities of Europe and North America, some Pentecostal congregations, and certain African American churches used Bethel for children and for church buildings.

Related biblical place names adopted as personal names include Zion, Salem, Ebenezer, and Gilead, each honoring a specific Old Testament location. Bethel stands among this cluster as a relatively gentle, lyrical option that combines the warmth of “house” with the divine reference of El.
