Denise Name Meaning, Origin & Popularity

/də.niz/

Meaning of Denise: Denise is the French feminine form of Denis, which derives from the Greek name Dionysios (Διονύσιος), meaning “of Dionysos” or “follower of Dionysos.” Dionysos (Latin: Dionysus) was the Greek god of wine, theater, ecstasy, and transformation.

The name Denis’ spread across the Catholic world came primarily through Saint Denis of Paris (died c. 250 AD), the first Bishop of Paris and patron saint of France, who was beheaded on Montmartre - a martyrdom that made the name prestigious throughout the Frankish kingdom.

The feminine form Denise developed in France as a natural adaptation of the masculine Denis into the feminine noun pattern. It followed the standard French feminization pattern (Denis → Denïse → Denise) and was in use in France by at least the 14th century.

What Does Denise Mean? Origin & Etymology

The name spread to England through French cultural influence and to the United States through French-Canadian immigration and general Francophile fashion in naming.

In the United States, Denise peaked dramatically between 1955 and 1970, ranking in the top 15 girls’ names for much of that period according to Social Security Administration records. Rank 14 in 1957 represents the name’s US peak.

This made Denise one of the defining feminine names of the Baby Boom generation. Today the name is far less common in new registrations but remains widely recognized as a classic mid-century American name.

Related names: Denis (masculine), Deni, Denny, Denitza. Further reading: etymology records and US popularity records from SSA.
