Umar ibn al-Khattab (584-644 CE) received the epithet al-Farouk (the Distinguisher) from the Prophet Muhammad, according to Islamic tradition. Umar was the second caliph after Abu Bakr and presided over rapid expansion of the Islamic state. He is revered by Sunni Muslims as one of the four Rightly Guided Caliphs.

The name became widely used in the Islamic world due to its association with Umar al-Farouk. Naming a son Farouk expressed admiration for the second caliph and the virtues he embodied: justice, discernment, and decisive leadership. The name spread from Arabia across North Africa, the Levant, and South Asia.

What Does Farouk Mean? Origin & Etymology

The most prominent modern bearer was Farouk I (1920-1965), the last king of Egypt before the 1952 revolution. His reign (1936-1952) ended with the Free Officers coup led by Naguib and Nasser. Despite his controversial legacy, his name remained in use across Arab countries throughout the 20th century.

Farouk is used across the Arab world - Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, and the Levant - as well as in Muslim communities in Turkey, South Asia, and the diaspora. The spelling Faruk is common in Turkish-influenced contexts, while Farouk is the Arabic transliteration.

Farouk does not rank in US SSA records. The Britannica entry on Umar I covers the second caliph whose epithet al-Farouk became one of the most honored titles in Islamic history and a given name throughout the Muslim world.
