Flaminius

Flaminius Name Meaning, Origin & Popularity

Meaning of Flaminius: Flaminius derives from Latin flamen, the title of a Roman priest dedicated to the cult of a specific deity. The flamines were among the oldest priesthoods in Roman religion. The Flaminia gens took its name from this priestly role, linking the family to Rome's most ancient religious traditions.

Gaius Flaminius (died 217 BCE) was the most significant bearer. As Roman magistrate and military commander, he was known for populist policies and his construction of the Via Flaminia - the road from Rome to Rimini that bore his name and remained an important artery through the medieval period.

Gaius Flaminius led the Roman army at Lake Trasimene in 217 BCE, one of the most catastrophic Roman defeats in the Second Punic War. He died as Hannibal's forces ambushed the Roman column. His death became a military history lesson about rashness and failure of reconnaissance.

What Does Flaminius Mean? Origin & Etymology

The Via Flaminia, built by Gaius Flaminius as censor in 220 BCE, connected Rome to the Adriatic coast through the Apennine mountains. It remained one of the major roads of Roman Italy through medieval times, with the name Flaminius permanently attached to this piece of Roman infrastructure.

As a given name, Flaminius is very rare in modern use, found primarily in historical scholarship, classical studies, and academic contexts. The name carries a strong antiquarian quality and is not found in contemporary naming practice outside highly classically oriented families.

Flaminius does not rank in US SSA records. The Britannica entry on Gaius Flaminius covers the Roman consul whose death at Lake Trasimene became one of the defining military disasters of the Second Punic War.
