Meaning of Gedaliah: Gedaliah (גְּדַלְיָהוּ) is a Hebrew masculine name composed of gadal (to grow great) and Yah (the divine name). It means God has made great or God has become great. The name is one of many Hebrew theophoric names formed with the divine element Yah.

In the Hebrew Bible, Gedaliah ben Ahikam was appointed governor of Judah by the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar after the destruction of Jerusalem in 586 BCE. He administered the remaining Jewish population. His assassination shortly afterward, narrated in Jeremiah and 2 Kings, ended Jewish autonomy.

The Fast of Gedaliah (Tzom Gedaliah) is observed on the 3rd of Tishrei in the Jewish calendar, the day after Rosh Hashanah. This minor fast day mourns the assassination of Gedaliah ben Ahikam, which ended the last vestige of Jewish autonomy in Judah after the Babylonian conquest.

What Does Gedaliah Mean? Origin & Etymology

The -iah or -yahu ending is characteristic of Hebrew theophoric names incorporating the divine name. Names like Isaiah, Jeremiah, Nehemiah, and Gedaliah all share this structure, connecting the bearer's name to divine action or attribute. This pattern is one of the most consistent in biblical Hebrew naming.

In modern Israel, Gedaliah appears as a given name in traditional religious communities. The name carries strong biblical and historical associations with the tragedy of the Babylonian exile and the Jewish calendar's commemoration of Gedaliah's death. It is relatively uncommon but historically meaningful.

Gedaliah does not rank in US SSA records. The Britannica entry on Jewish history covers the Babylonian conquest period in which Gedaliah served as governor, placing this name at the center of one of the most formative events in the history of the Jewish people.
