Goneril

Goneril Name Meaning, Origin & Popularity

/ˈɡɑn.ə.ɹɪl/

Meaning of Goneril: Goneril is a literary feminine name created by William Shakespeare for the eldest daughter of King Lear in his tragedy King Lear (c. 1606). The name's etymology is uncertain; Shakespeare may have adapted it from Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia Regum Britanniae (c. 1136), where the name Gonorilla appears.

In Geoffrey of Monmouth's account, Gonorilla (spelled variously) is one of the daughters of the legendary British King Leir. The origin of Geoffrey's name is unclear but may derive from Brittonic or Welsh roots. Shakespeare adapted this source material significantly in creating his dramatic version of the Lear story.

In Shakespeare's King Lear, Goneril is the eldest of Lear's three daughters. She and her sister Regan flatter their father to gain their inheritance, then cruelly strip him of his retinue and dignity. Goneril becomes one of the most powerful villainous female characters in the Shakespearean canon.

What Does Goneril Mean? Origin & Etymology

Goneril's role in the play drives the central tragedy of filial ingratitude and the corruption of power. She enters into an adulterous relationship with Edmund, eventually poisons her sister Regan in rivalry, and dies by suicide at the play's catastrophic conclusion — one of Shakespeare's most compelling anti-heroines.

As a given name, Goneril is used almost exclusively in theatrical and literary contexts, and very rarely as an actual personal name due to the character's extreme negative associations. The name carries unmistakable connotations of treachery and cruelty from Shakespeare's text.

Goneril does not rank in US SSA records. It is used extremely rarely as a personal name. The name is primarily known as one of the most famous villainous characters in Shakespeare's tragedies. Reference: etymology records.
