The name is inseparable from Hesiod of Ascra (c. 750-650 BCE), one of the earliest Greek poets whose works survive. He composed during the same broad period as Homer, and ancient Greeks regarded both as the twin pillars of early Greek epic and didactic poetry.

Hesiod's Theogony is the foundational Greek account of the birth of the gods and the origin of the cosmos. Through approximately 1,000 lines of hexameter verse, it established the genealogies and relationships of the Olympian gods that shaped Greek religious and literary tradition for centuries.

What Does Hesiod Mean? Origin & Etymology

His second major work, Works and Days, is an early example of didactic poetry addressed to his brother Perses. It describes the five ages of humanity, the myth of Pandora, the agricultural calendar, and practical ethics — making it a primary source for early Greek moral thought.

Hesiod wrote from the perspective of a small farmer in Boeotia, giving his poetry a distinctly rural voice that contrasts with the aristocratic heroic world of Homer. Scholars prize his work as a rare first-person account of archaic Greek peasant life and values.

Hesiod does not rank in US SSA records. It is used extremely rarely as a given name, almost exclusively by classicists and enthusiasts of ancient Greek literature. Reference: etymology records.
