Queen Hetepheres I (fl. c. 2600 BCE) was the mother of Pharaoh Khufu, builder of the Great Pyramid. Her tomb furnishings, found intact by George Reisner in 1925, are among the finest Old Kingdom examples known. The discovery made her one of the most documented queens of the period.

Queen Hetepheres II was the daughter of Khufu and a queen of the Fourth Dynasty. She appears in relief carvings at Giza. The two Hetepheres queens together represent the name at the apex of Fourth Dynasty royal power.

What Does Hetepheres Mean? Origin & Etymology

The name reflects the central role of Horus in Egyptian royal ideology. The pharaoh was considered the living embodiment of Horus, and names expressing satisfaction from Horus carried royal associations. Hetepheres was a name of high prestige within the Egyptian royal family.

As a personal name, Hetepheres is essentially unknown in modern use outside Egyptological scholarship. It appears in academic publications about Old Kingdom Egypt and in museum displays of the Hetepheres I tomb furniture.

Hetepheres does not rank in US SSA records. The Britannica entry on ancient Egypt provides context for the Old Kingdom royal culture in which Hetepheres was the name of two queens connected to the pharaohs who built the most famous monuments of the ancient world.
