Bart

Bart Name Meaning, Origin & Popularity

/ˈbɑɹt/

Meaning of Bart: Bart is a short form of Bartholomew, derived from Aramaic bar-Talmai, meaning “son of Talmai.” Talmai is itself a Hebrew name possibly meaning “furrow” or connected to the Aramaean city of Telmah. Bartholomew was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus, identified by many scholars as the same person as Nathanael in the Gospel of John.

Bartholomew was a popular name in medieval Europe due to apostolic veneration, and Saint Bartholomew’s feast day on August 24 was widely observed. The Saint Bartholomew’s Day Massacre (1572), in which thousands of French Huguenots were killed in Paris, gave the name a dark historical association while keeping it in public consciousness.

Bart developed as a natural short form in English-speaking countries, used alongside Barty and Barry. In the Netherlands, Bart became popular as an independent given name throughout the 20th century, separate from Bartholomew. The American animated series The Simpsons (1989–present), in which Bart Simpson is the mischievous eldest son, brought the name to global recognition as a pop culture icon.

What Does Bart Mean? Origin & Etymology

Today Bart is recognized by Nameberry and appears in both American and Dutch birth records. The Simpsons association makes it widely recognizable, though that same association has given it a comedic quality that some parents embrace and others avoid.
