Celine

Celine Name Meaning, Origin & Popularity

/sə.ˈlin/

Etymology records trace Caelius to the Caelian Hill in Rome, one of the seven hills of the ancient city. The patrician Caelia family produced senators during the Republic, and the feminine form Caelina appears on funerary inscriptions from the first century CE across Italy and Gaul.

Saint Céline of Laon, a seventh-century abbess and mother of Saint Remigius, preserved the name in medieval French hagiography. Her cult spread through the Carolingian church, and by the 1200s Céline appears in French parish records as a regular baptismal name, especially in the Champagne and Picardy regions.

What Does Celine Mean? Origin & Etymology

The name spread into English usage through nineteenth-century French literature. Honoré de Balzac gave the name to a character in Illusions perdues, and Louis-Ferdinand Céline, the controversial twentieth-century novelist, drew further literary attention to the surname form during the 1930s.

Quebec-born singer Céline Dion carried the name to global recognition after her 1997 performance of My Heart Will Go On for the film Titanic.

According to SSA records, Celine jumped from rank #667 in 1997 to rank #253 by 1999. The name reached its US peak of #227 in 2024 with 1,347 births.

For documented etymology, see the etymology records, and for current US birth figures consult the Social Security Administration baby name database.
