Jonah

Jonah Name Meaning, Origin & Popularity

/ˈd͡ʒoʊ.nə/

Meaning of Jonah: Jonah derives from the Hebrew Yonah, meaning "dove." The dove in Hebrew symbolism represents peace, the Holy Spirit, and the promise of new beginnings -- as in the story of Noah's ark, where the dove returns with an olive branch as a sign of renewed life after the flood.

The Book of Jonah is one of the most narratively compelling books in the Hebrew Bible. The prophet Jonah, commanded by God to preach repentance to Nineveh (the capital of Assyria, Israel's enemy), flees instead by ship.

A great storm causes the sailors to cast him overboard, where he is swallowed by a large fish and remains inside for three days before being expelled onto the shore, after which he completes his mission.

What Does Jonah Mean? Origin & Etymology

The story's theological core is the surprise of divine mercy extended to Nineveh's repentance -- and Jonah's own reluctant acceptance of that mercy.

Jesus references the story in Matthew 12:40, calling it a sign of his own coming death and resurrection, making Jonah's three days in the fish one of the most theologically significant passages in the Hebrew Bible.

Jonah was used in English from the Reformation onward, though it carried a folk superstition -- a "Jonah" on a ship was considered bad luck, a burden who would cause disaster. This association limited the name's use through the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Jonah ranked 110th for boys in the US in 2024. Its revival reflects the reattachment to its dove-and-mercy meaning rather than its sailor-superstition usage, and its gentle two-syllable sound aligns with the current preference for soft, literary biblical names.

Frequently Asked Questions about Jonah

What does the name Jonah mean?

Jonah means "dove," from Hebrew Yonah. The dove in Hebrew symbolism represents peace, the Holy Spirit, and new beginnings. It is the same bird that returned to Noah's ark with an olive branch. As a name, Jonah carries both the bird's gentle symbolism and the prophet's story of reluctance, second chances, and divine mercy.

Who was the prophet Jonah?

Jonah was a Hebrew prophet commanded by God to preach repentance to Nineveh, the Assyrian capital. He fled by sea, was thrown overboard in a storm, swallowed by a great fish, and spent three days inside it before being released. Jesus references the story in Matthew 12:40 as a sign of his own death and resurrection. The Book of Jonah is one of the shortest and most narratively surprising in the Hebrew Bible.

What does 'being a Jonah' mean?

A 'Jonah' is a folk expression for a person who brings bad luck, particularly at sea -- derived from Jonah's presence on the ship that encountered the storm. The superstition was widespread among sailors for centuries. The expression persisted through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, contributing to the name's relative avoidance during that period.

How popular is Jonah in the United States?

Jonah ranked 110th for boys in the US in 2024. It entered the top 100 in 2015 and has maintained that position since, benefiting from the revival of soft, literary biblical names. It moved from rank 296 in 1999 to inside the top 115 by 2024.

What names are similar to Jonah?

Names in the same two-syllable biblical dove-and-peace category include Noah (rest), Micah (who is like God), and Ezra (help). Names sharing Jonah's specific gentle, one-animal-meaning quality include Robin and Wren. The female equivalent Jonah is rare; Joanna is the feminine counterpart via a different path.
