Lena

/ˈleː.na/

The name Lena is a short form shared across multiple European languages, most commonly associated with Helena, Elena, Magdalena, and Yelena.

Through Helena, the ultimate root is the Greek Helenē (Ἑλένη), most plausibly derived from the Proto-Indo-European *swel-, “to shine,” giving the sense of “shining light” or “torch.” Through Magdalena, it relates to the Hebrew place name Magdala,

meaning “tower.” The convergence of these sources has made Lena a short form with remarkably broad cross-cultural reach.

What the name Lena means

The name is attested as an independent given name in Scandinavia and Germany from the 17th century, initially as a truncation of fuller forms and gradually as a freestanding name.

In Slavic languages, especially Russian, Ukrainian, and Polish, Lena functions as a diminutive of Yelena or Helena and has long carried the warm familiarity of a household name.

The Swedish form took hold during the early 20th century as Nordic parents moved away from biblical and royal elaborations toward simpler 2-syllable names.

Literary and artistic bearers span centuries and continents. Lena Horne (1917-2010), the American singer and actress, broke racial barriers in Hollywood and on Broadway and became a civil rights activist of long standing.

The Russian Lena River, 1 of the 3 longest rivers in Siberia, gave its name to the revolutionary Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov in its alternate reading, though the connection between the river and his pseudonym Lenin is disputed among historians.

In film, Lena appears in works by Ingmar Bergman, Andrei Tarkovsky, and, more recently, as the protagonist of the television series Girls created by Lena Dunham, which premiered in 2012.

According to U.S. Social Security Administration records, Lena appeared continuously in the top 1000 from 1880 into the 1940s, receded mid-century, and returned strongly beginning in the late 1990s.

By the 2010s it ranked within the top 300, driven both by German-American and Russian-American families and by the broader revival of short vintage names.

In Germany, Sweden, Norway, and Poland, Lena has ranked among the top 20 girls’ names in multiple years of the 2000s and 2010s.
