Luis
/ˈlwis/
The name Luis is the Spanish and Portuguese form of Louis, descended through Old French Loois from the Frankish Hludwig, a compound of hlūd meaning “famous” and wīg meaning “warrior” or “battle.” The literal sense is therefore “renowned in battle.”
The Latinized form Ludovicus generated a vast family of European cognates, including the Italian Luigi, the German Ludwig, the Hungarian Lajos, and the Polish Ludwik.
The name owes its prestige to the Frankish king Clovis I (whose name shares the same root) and to the dynasty of French kings who bore the title Louis from Louis the Pious in the 9th century through Louis XVIII in the 19th.
What the name Luis means
The most beloved was Saint Louis IX (1214-1270), who led the Seventh and Eighth Crusades, built the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris to house the Crown of Thorns, and was canonized in 1297.
His feast day, August 25, remains a major celebration in Catholic Spain and Latin America.
In the Iberian world the form Luis was carried by Saint Luis Beltrán, the 16th-century Dominican missionary to Colombia, and by Luís Vaz de Camões (c.
1524-1580), the Portuguese national poet whose epic Os Lusíadas recounts Vasco da Gama’s voyage to India.
Spanish literature added Luis de Góngora, the Baroque master of culteranismo, and Mexican letters produced the Nobel laureate Octavio Paz, whose first name honored an earlier Luis in the family.
Luis has been a fixture of US Social Security records since 1880 and has never left the top 500. It climbed steadily during the second half of the 20th century with Hispanic immigration, peaking at No.

Contemporary bearers include the Argentine footballer Luis Suárez, the Spanish footballer Luis Enrique, the actor Luis Guzmán, and the children’s television character Luis from Sesame Street.
The name carries simultaneously regal European, devoutly Catholic, and warmly familial connotations across more than 20 nations.
