Remy
RE-mee
Remy is the anglicised form of the French Rémi, which derives from the Latin Remigius, from remigium meaning “oarage” or “the act of rowing,” from remus (“oar”).
Saint Remigius of Reims, who baptised Clovis I—the Frankish king—in 496 AD, gave the name lasting importance in French Catholic tradition. The city of Reims itself is said to carry his name.
Remy peaked at No. 356 in 2020 with 872 births. In 2024 it sits at No. 400 with 801 births, holding close to its peak.
What the name Remy means
The 2007 Pixar film Ratatouille introduced the name to an entire generation through its French rat protagonist Rémy, giving the name a playful, creative association in American culture.
Two syllables—REM-ee—land easily in English. The spelling without the accent makes it more accessible in American records while preserving the French pronunciation.
Remy is genuinely gender-neutral in American usage: SSA data shows it given to both boys and girls in roughly similar numbers in recent years.
In France, Rémi remains predominantly masculine. The American form Remy has drifted into mixed-gender territory, which some parents find appealing and others deliberately avoid.
