Thaddeus
/ˈθæd.i.əs/
Thaddeus comes from Thaddaios, the Greek form of an Aramaic name - possibly Thaddai meaning "heart" or related to an Aramaic root meaning "courageous." Some scholars connect it to the Hebrew name Todah (praise) or suggest it may be a variant of Theudas. The uncertainty is ancient; early commentators already disagreed on the etymology.
In the New Testament, Thaddaeus is listed among the Twelve Apostles - identified with Jude (not Iscariot) in Matthew 10:3 and Mark 3:18. He is the same person as Jude the Apostle, also called Lebbaeus in some manuscripts. Saint Jude Thaddaeus became the patron saint of lost causes, one of the most actively invoked saints in Catholic tradition.
Thaddeus Kosciuszko (1746-1817), the Polish-American military engineer who served as a brigadier general in the Continental Army during the American Revolution, gave the name particular American historical resonance. He designed the fortifications at West Point and Saratoga, and his friendship with Thomas Jefferson shaped American ideals of liberty.
