Baldric

Baldric Name Meaning, Origin & Popularity

/ˈbɔld.ɹɪk/

Meaning of Baldric: The name Baldric derives from two Old High German elements: bald, meaning “bold” or “brave,” and rih, meaning “ruler” or “king.” The compound therefore reads as “bold ruler,” a type of honorific compound widespread in early medieval Germanic naming.

Frankish scribes of the Merovingian and Carolingian periods recorded the name in various forms, including Baldric, Baldrih, and Baudry. The ninth-century Capitulary of Aachen preserves several instances among the Frankish nobility, and parallel Anglo-Saxon records use the cognate form Bealdric.

Furthermore, a seventh-century Frankish saint bore the name. Saint Baldric, son of the Merovingian duke Sigebert III, founded the monastery of Montfaucon in the Argonne region of northeastern France. His foundation became a significant ecclesiastical center under the early Carolingians, which spread the name through monastic tradition.

What Does Baldric Mean? Origin & Etymology

Notably, the Norman Conquest of 1066 introduced Baldric to medieval England in its French form Baudry. The Domesday Book of 1086 records several Norman landholders bearing the name, particularly in Yorkshire, Herefordshire, and the Welsh Marches (see Norman Conquest).

The medieval chronicler Baudri of Bourgueil (1046–1130) and the historian Baldric of Dol (c. 1050–1130) both bore the name. Baldric of Dol wrote a notable chronicle of the First Crusade, which shaped later European memory of the campaign and kept the name attached to serious scholarly work.

By the late medieval period Baldric had faded from given-name use and survived chiefly as a surname. Therefore modern recognition of the name comes partly through onomastic study and partly through the television comedy Blackadder, which borrowed the historical name for its servant character Baldrick.
