Iker
/ˈi.keɾ/
Iker means “visitation” in Basque.
It was coined in 1910 by the Basque nationalist intellectual Sabino Arana as a Basque equivalent of the Spanish name Visitación, a Marian title referring to the Visitation of the Virgin Mary to her cousin Elizabeth as described in the Gospel of Luke.
The name was created as part of Arana’s broader effort to establish authentically Basque given names at a time when Spanish colonial naming pressure was strong. It was deliberately coined to replace a Spanish name with a Basque-sounding alternative.
What the name Iker means
Iker ranked No. 384 in 2024 with 841 births. It peaked at No. 190 in 2015 with 2,176 births, driven almost entirely by Spanish goalkeeper Iker Casillas.
Iker Casillas (1981–) is the Spanish national football team and Real Madrid goalkeeper whose career achievements — including 2 UEFA Champions League titles and the 2010 FIFA World Cup — made him one of the most celebrated players of his generation and
the primary driver of the name’s American adoption.
Two syllables — EE-ker — are short and striking. The initial I vowel and the soft -er ending give it an approachable sound for English speakers despite its Basque origin.
Parents in Latino communities who follow European football and admire Casillas consistently drive the name’s adoption. It is one of the clearest cases of a sports-icon name in modern US naming.
Related Basque names include Aitor, Gaizka, Unai, and Mikel. In the Christian tradition, the Visitation reference connects it to Elizabeth and Visitación.
