Kaleb

/ˈkeɪ.ləb/

Kaleb is a phonetic respelling of the Hebrew name Caleb, rendered in original script as Kālēv (כָּלֵב).

The traditional etymology connects the name to the Hebrew root kelev, meaning “dog,” interpreted in ancient Semitic culture as a symbol of loyal devotion rather than the negative connotation the word later acquired.

A second scholarly reading splits the name as kol-lev, meaning “whole heart” or “wholehearted,” a fitting etymology given the biblical Caleb’s characterization.

What the name Kaleb means

The original biblical Caleb, son of Jephunneh, appears in the Book of Numbers as 1 of the 12 scouts sent by Moses into Canaan around the 13th century BCE.

Only Caleb and Joshua returned with a favorable report, and for this loyalty Caleb was promised the territory of Hebron, which he later claimed at the age of 85 according to the Book of Joshua, chapter 14.

His name became a symbol of steadfast faith within Jewish and Christian tradition alike.

The spelling Kaleb emerged in modern American usage during the late 20th century, following a broader pattern of respelling biblical names with the letter K for stylistic differentiation.

Literary and cinematic use of the traditional form Caleb surged after the 1990s, with characters in The Vampire Diaries and the 2014 film Ex Machina contributing to the name’s visibility.

Kaleb first appeared in the U.S. SSA top 1000 in 1989 and climbed rapidly, reaching roughly number 130 by 2011. While the traditional Caleb spelling remains more common, Kaleb has maintained a steady place within the top 250 through the 2020s.

The spelling is particularly popular in the American South and among families drawn to evangelical Christian naming traditions.

Contemporary bearers include several NCAA basketball players and the YouTube figure Kaleb Wolf De Melo Torres, known online as Kaleb from Shriners.
